14 Karat Vs. 18 Karat:
Visually, the difference between 14K and 18K gold (including white, yellow and rose) is very minor. Yellow and rose gold in 18K are just slightly deeper in color than they are in 14K.
But the most significant differences between 14K and 18K gold are value and hardness.
14K is the most commonly-used metal type for everyday jewelry including engagement rings. It has a moderately high gold content and is technically a harder, stronger metal alloy than 18K.
18K contains an even higher gold content than 14K - making it more valuable. The downside is that this higher gold content can make the metal alloy very slightly more prone to bending, as gold itself is a soft, malleable metal.
White Gold Vs. Platinum:
White gold does not exist in nature. It is simply a modified version of yellow gold that includes a bright plating! This will look very similar to platinum initially but can fade to a slightly warmer-toned white over the years. Some people love this slightly warmer look and don't ever want to get it re-plated! But if you don't love it, we can re-dip your ring to get the bright white look again.
Platinum will never need to be re-plated as it is naturally bright white. That being said, platinum is not always the perfect metal for all ring types - we recommend it for simpler styles without pavé. Keep in mind that it is also easier to scratch platinum than 14K and 18K gold.
If you need help deciding which metal to use for your ring, simply send us a message! We'd be happy to help with absolutely no purchase obligation.
